Benefits Of Henna Powder For Hair

Henna Powder For Hair

You all have heard about the beauty of the last reigning queen of the ancient Egyptian civilisation, Cleopatra! Do you know the secret of her beautiful skin and hair? Keep reading to unravel the beauty knots…

Cleopatra was fond of using Henna to nourish her body and beautify herself. Henna is a flowering plant and a natural source of dye, used to dye fabrics like silk, wool and leather. Henna powder is collected by crushing the leaves of the henna plant.

Henna has antifungal properties which makes it a good choice for people with dandruff and hair fall issues. It also helps in reducing premature greying of hair because it contains a plant-based compound, tannins, which helps in getting a vibrant colour shade. Henna contains Vitamin E as well which helps to soften hair strands and get rid of dry, frizzy hair. It is rich in proteins and its antioxidant properties support hair growth.

  • Henna has natural properties which help in promoting hair growth and the powder form of Henna can also be used to make essential oils that nourish the scalp.

  • It helps to improve follicle health leading to healthy hair growth. It prevents thinning of hair and curbs hair loss.

  • When Henna is mixed with hydrating ingredients like egg white, it acts as a perfect conditioner. It makes the hair silky and smooth.

  • Henna helps to clean the scalp from dirt and dust, which makes it an effective solution for preventing dandruff.
  • Henna helps to control scalp itchiness due to its antifungal and antimicrobial properties. It cools and soothes the scalp to control itchiness.

Henna is believed to be a natural cure for stomach ulcers (inflammatory bowel disorder). It might help in fighting certain infections and prevent the growth of tumours but there is not enough evidence to support the aforesaid.

  1. Mix the half cup of 50g Henna powder with 1/4th cup of 60 ml warm water and stir it with a spoon to make a paste with good consistency. Cover the bowl with plastic once you are done with stirring and let it develop at room temperature for about 10-12 hours. Once it is ready to be applied, add more water if required to have a thick but spreadable consistency.
  2. Before applying Henna, wash your hair with a mild shampoo and let it dry. Do not apply conditioner, as it may prevent Henna from entering your roots properly.
  3. Put on a headband to keep your hair out of your face and apply some coconut oil or petroleum jelly to your hairline so that the oil will create a barrier between the Henna and your skin to prevent stains.
  4. Detangle your knots and part your hair in the centre. Wear some old clothes and drape a cloth around your neck to protect your skin from stains. If possible, wear gloves as well to protect your hands and nails.
  5. Apply the paste to your hair in small sections and at the end, wrap plastic wrap around your hair. Wrapping will keep the Henna warm and it will let the moisture settle. Leave it on for a few hours, to get a deeper and vibrant colour.
  6. Wash your hair and apply conditioner to help loosen the paste. Continue washing till the paste is completely off your hair.
  7. The colour might take a few days to be visible so have patience.

Henna and banana hair mask will act as a conditioner if applied properly. Add two tablespoons of Henna powder with water and mix it in a bowl and let it soak for a night. The next morning, add a ripe banana into the bowl and mash it to make a paste. Apply it liberally on your hair and leave it for 5 minutes. Wash your hair with cold water and repeat using this hair mask every once a week.

Mix one cup of amla powder with 3 tablespoons of Henna powder, add some water and stir to make a paste. Add egg white and two tablespoons lemon juice and let it soak for about an hour. You can add two tablespoons of fenugreek powder as well to make the hair mask more effective. Apply this directly to your roots and hair strands and leave it on for 45 minutes. Wash your hair with a mild shampoo and repeat it once a week to prevent hair loss.

  1. Henna is a permanent hair dye and is most vibrant during the first 4-6 weeks and after that, it gradually starts to fade off. Once you dye your hair, it will be difficult to highlight your hair using a lighter colour.

  2. Some of the Henna brands contain metallic salts and you cannot use chemical hair dyes over them. The result will be a chemical reaction and can have a serious side effect leading to hair damage.

  3. Henna is a bit messy when applying to hair and it can leave stains on your skin as well. It is highly recommended to apply Henna on your hair in the bathroom because it will drip down your forehead and on the floor as well.

The henna powder may have a lot of benefits due to its anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, but one should always be aware of the side effects of Henna. It can cause some side effects like redness, itching, burning, swelling, scarring of skin and blisters as well.

Usually, these reactions are due to the other ingredients added to Henna but our scalp and hair are sensitive zones and prone to breakage due to various factors and applying a new type of plant-based product without prior testing can lead to adverse effects which I bet no one would like to encounter. Henna can cure dandruff issues and make your hair look prettier and feel healthier but avoid ingesting Henna and always test it on your scalp before applying it to your entire head.

Take Away

Henna builds a protective layer for each hair strand guarding it against any kind of damage. To get thick and lustrous locks, apply Henna once a week. Henna prevents split ends and clogging of pores due to its antifungal properties. It helps in boosting scalp health as well.
